Smoking accounts for 1 in 5 adult male deaths in India and 1 in 20 female deaths ages 30-69, but there is currently a scarcity of research on how taxation of cigarettes and bidis - thin, handrolled cigarettes - would affect tobacco use patterns in India.  A recent NBER working paper by CDDEP post-doctoral scholar Arindam Nandi and co-authors attempts to address this gap by analyzing the price elasticities associated with both bidi and cigarette purchases.

It’s been a fall of mixed news on antibiotic use in the agricultural industry in the United States.  Advocates of restricting the practice balked at the FDA’s rejection, in November, of two citizen petitions enlisting the agency’s help in banning certain uses of antibiotics for livestock due to concerns about emerging antibiotic resistance.

Last week CDDEP, in collaboration with the Development Impact Evaluation Initiative of the World Bank, the Spanish Impact Evaluation Fund, the Affordable Medicines Facility-malaria (AMFm) at the Global Fund, and the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), hosted a workshop on Innovations in Health Care Financing and Service Delivery: Making Malaria Treatment Available.
