Forum on Sustainable Access to Effective Antibiotics

Tuesday, September 20, 2016 - 04:00 to 06:30

Visit event website for more details and to watch the livestream at 4:00 p.m., September 20.

The Global Antibiotic Resistance Partnership, in collaboration with The British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, The German Center for Infection Research, The Infectious Diseases Society of America, The Norwegian Institute of Public Health, and The Wellcome Trust, will host a forum of global leaders on Sustainable Access to Effective Antibiotics preceding the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting on Antimicrobial Resistance.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) threatens to undo decades of progress in combatting disease. On September 21, 2016, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) will confront this issue – only the third time a health topic has been discussed at a high-level UNGA meeting. The session provides a powerful opportunity to organize the global response to AMR and ensure the future sustainability of our antibiotics.

The invitation-only event will take place from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m. on September 20, 2016 at the Yale Club of New York City, where leaders in the field of AMR – including presidents, UN agency directors, and industry CEOs – will discuss the issue on the eve of the high-level meeting. Panels will address the pillars of AMR control: stewardship and conservation, innovation, and global accountability and governance. The panel discussions will be followed by a cocktail reception until 7:30 p.m.

Stewardship and conservation: The global supply of effective antibiotics is dwindling. New drugs and alternatives are part of the solution, but the main thrust should be to conserve the effectiveness of the antibiotics we currently have. Further, lack of access to antibiotics still kills more people – particularly children – than resistant infections, and resistance threatens to escalate the problem of access. Our first panel of experts will discuss how to best safeguard our antibiotic supply.

Innovation: New drugs, diagnostics, alternatives, and other interventions to curb AMR are urgently needed. Innovation must come from researchers and public and private sector actors. Our second panel of experts in innovation and financing will discuss potential solutions to the challenges facing innovation in AMR.

Global accountability and governance: The future of AMR control will be successful only if there is an effective, One Health governance mechanism ensuring global accountability. The resolution on AMR control that heads of state will sign at the UNGA is only the first step forward in combatting resistance. Our final panel will discuss the way forward with the leading global stakeholders in AMR.
