GARP-India began in 2009, and continues under the leadership of Professor NK Ganguly, former director of the Indian Council of Medical Research. India led the October 2011 First Global Forum on Bacterial Infections, held in New Delhi, that crowned the completion of GARP Phase 1.
GARP-India co-sponsored a 2-day course on antimicrobial stewardship for healthcare workers in Indian hospitals, followed by a policy forum on antimicrobial resistance in India. Partners were the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (BSAC) and the Public Health Foundation of India (PHFI). More recent activities can be found on the CDDEP blog.
Momentum generated from the November meeting on antibiotic stewardship resulted in renaming the undergraduate and post-graduate programs for microbiology as Clinical Microbiology. GARP-India members are revising and updating the curriculum for medical training leading to a degree in this area.
