GARP: South Africa

GARP-South Africa was established in 2010, with a working group under the leadership of Chairman Adriano Duse from the University of Witwatersrand. The working group published a situation analysis on antibiotic resistance as a series of articles in a special issue of the South African Medical Journal in 2011. The situation analysis provided the impetus for creation of the South African Antimicrobial Stewardship Programme (SAASP) in 2012, under the auspices of the Federation of Infectious Diseases Societies of Southern Africa (FIDDSA) and spearheaded by Prof Marc Mendelson and Dr Adrian Brink. These clinicians approached the Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, in 2013 to voice their growing concerns about antibiotic misuse and the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance in the country. The Minister of Health acknowledged the urgency of the issue and committed to gathering stakeholders together to develop a strategy for action.

As a result, the National Department of Health convened a meeting of local and international experts in human and animal microbiology as well as academics, policymakers, healthcare workers and regulators. From this, an Antimicrobial Resistance Working Group (AMR WG) was formed, comprising experts in infectious disease and public health. They developed a set of high-level strategic objectives, aligned with the WHO Resolution on antimicrobial resistance (WHA67.25, 2014).

In October 2014, the Antimicrobial Resistance National Strategy Framework 2014-2024 was adopted, and implementation is under way. SAASP continues to lead collaboration with the Ministry of Health and with continued support from CDDEP, but GARP-SA is not currently active.
