Using Oral Vancomycin Prescriptions as a Proxy Measure for Clostridium difficile Infections: A Spatial and Time Series Analysis

Using Oral Vancomycin Prescriptions as a Proxy Measure for Clostridium difficile Infections: A Spatial and Time Series Analysis

The Question

Are oral vancomycin sales are a usefulmarker for Clostridium difficile activity and what historical changes inthe epidemiology of CDI are associated with changes in oral vancomycinprescribing?

What we found

A statistically significant andpositive association between the number of oral vancomycin prescriptions andthe number of CDI cases was determined.  Thisindicated that CDI cases are associated with a simultaneous increase in oralvancomycin use.

Why it matters

A change in prescribing oral vancomycincan be viewed as a possible signal for a change in practice and/or possibly achange in the epidemiology of C. difficile.
